New Jersey Supreme Court: Upholds Appeals Court Decision
All 12 casinos in New Jersey's Atlantic City will close following a ruling by New Jersey's Supreme Court, as the court turned down an appeal to block the order for the casinos' closure due to a budget conflict.
Associate Justice James Zazzali upheld a state appeals court decision denying the casinos' appeal to counter the Casino Control Commission's order for closure.
Since Atlantic City gaming venues cannot operate without state inspectors, there was no option to remain open after Governor Jon Corzine has deemed the inspectors as non-essential workers, for whom the state has no more budget for.
About 45,000 non-essential workers would lose their jobs after the casinos' closure.
Corzine meanwhile, has said has said he will veto any bill that doesn't include a sales tax increase to help fill a $4.5 billion deficit.
Republican Assemblyman Francis Blee, a member of the Assembly Budget Committee who represents the Atlantic City area told reporters: ''It's going to be devastating to our region.'' He added, "While leaders here in Trenton are playing a game of political chicken, real people are being hurt.''
Atlantic City casinos estimate their loss to reach $16 million a day in gambling revenue, as July and August are traditionally the busiest months of the year in Atlantic City.
