Gamblers Anonymous Calls For Stronger Online Gambling Laws

A meeting took place in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The weekly meeting was organized by Gamblers Anonymous and they noticed that the number of young people attending the meetings have increased significantly.

One of the young people attending the meeting is Ryan an 18-year-old. Twice a week he's been attending the meetings of Gamblers Anonymous in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Ryan is currently under probation for arrest due to identity theft in fueling his gambling habit. He lost his scholarship to Duke University where he would have been a freshman this fall. He is trying to piece his young life together again.

In America it is illegal for an American gambling company to establish online-gambling sites, under a 1961 antiracketeering law. But the law does not stop players like Ryan from placing wagers at any of the 2,500 gambling Web sites.

The U.S. Federal Government are putting their efforts towards stopping online-gambling companies from Britain, the Caribbean and Costa Rica from setting up their Internet servers and credit card operations in the United States.

The House passed a measure last month to prevent the banks and credit card companies from making payments to internet gambling sites based outside of the United States.

The Gamblers Anonymous group wants to make a change for these online-gambling sites amd to help prevent the problems like those that Ryan faced.
